Electronics Assembly Training for IPC Certification: Where to Start?

The IPC-A-610, Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies, is the most widely used standard published by the Association Connecting Electronics Industries, and is implemented worldwide by original equipment manufacturers and electronic manufacturing services (EMS). EMS designs, manufactures, tests, distributes, and repairs electronic components and assemblies for original equipment manufacturers (OEM). The services provided by EMS are also referred to as electronics contract manufacturing (ECM). The IPC provides standards for the electronics industry and is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), an organization respected globally for its standards. The IPC-A-610 is essentially a book of pictures and illustrations portraying acceptance criteria that reflect the requirements of standards and specifications.

Historically, electronic assembly standards contained more comprehensive and tutorial information relating to principles and techniques. As process methods began to change, the standardization of methods began to lag, creating conflict between parties. As a result, the Assembly and Joining Process Committee (along with the EIA Soldering Technology Committee) developed the joint standard, J-STD-001: Requirements for Soldering Electrical and Electronic Assemblies. So, in the end, the IPC-A-610 is a picture book that provides clarification and definition to the final product requirements that should result from the use of materials, processes, and design requirements described in the J-STD-001.
